Puppy Food Discussions
~ the good, the bad, and the ugly truth...

Diamond Natural Large Breed puppy

Be sure to buy the Naturals ~ not to be mistaken with other Diamond Puppy food. The latter a lesser quality product.

Please, Note~OwyheeStar has been feeding your puppy the Diamond Naturals  Large Breed Puppy Lamb & Rice  Formula for several years.

Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy

Puppy food is a multi-million dollar business. Everyone wants your loyalty. There are five-star rated puppy chow. You might ask the question why we don't think most of these are a better product. The answer is simple. We have tried quite a few and less stellar results across the board. There is no one food that works for every Weimaraner; however, it is almost alway true that avoiding grain in their diet is a smart choice.

We are not saying that one company is evil and another has pure motives. There are plenty of folks arguing this on a daily basis. We don't want to get into the debate. There are five large manufacturers in the United States. They make most of the food--varying the ingredients and labels.  Click Here to read our blog on this topic. Purina is famous and does a lot for the dog community. Regardless, we think there are better choices for your Weimaraner puppy. If you find the food in your local grocery it is probably not a food you should bring home. The Diamond Naturals are not usually picked up at the local pet store. You are more apt to find them at the local pet store or specialty shop. You can locate a distributor near you on the Diamond Website's Where To Buy Page. You can order it delivered to your door. We have had excellent luck with Chewy.com. Click here to purchase a bad delivered to your door in record time.

Other Than Kibble

OwyheeStar has mixed feelings about both the raw and cooked diets. Proponents and critics agree to disagree about the benefit, as well as the risk factors. The importance of an appropriately balanced canine diet, and understanding how this works can be confusing. Some advocates report that allergies and skin problems evaporated when they moved to preparing their pet's food--or in some cases used a raw diet.

Please discuss this option with your vet before diving in without the downside explained. We are not against doing this type of thing; however, it is more than just cooking or throwing raw meat to your Weimaraner. The raw diet has bacterial elements that might infect your or cause intestinal problems in your pet. The cooked diet is hard to figure out. Regardless, there are those totally sold on one of these methods. Be informed. You must realize the commitment is going to require a great deal more effort. Make sure you can invest that time and money to do it right.

          Zuke's Mini Naturals

HEALTHY MOIST MINIATURE DOG TREATS WITH ADDED VITAMINS AND MINERALS

•   WHEAT, CORN, & SOY FREE

•   LESS THAN 3.5 CALORIES PER TREAT

•   SEASONINGS & WHOLEFOODS

•   GREAT FOR TRAINING

ONE TASTY LITTLE MINI AND ZUKE IS AT FULL ATTENTION.  HE SITS, STAYS, AND FOCUSES - READY TO LEARN OR JUST ENJOY A HEALTHY TREAT FOR BEING SUCH A GOOD BOY.  THE NATURALLY DELICIOUS FORMULA MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE - QUALITY PROTEIN, WHOLEFOOD INGREDIENTS, AND A MOUTHWATERING TASTE YOUR DOG WILL LOVE.  SO FEED A HANDFUL AND MAKE YOUR TIME TOGETHER A HEALTHY ADVENTURE.

Live Life's Healthy Adventure Together (from the company)

At Zuke's we believe being healthy goes beyond ingredients.  We craft every treat to be amazingly healthy - always have, always will.  For us it's about living a life of adventure together - being active, getting outdoors, exploring the world.  It's what we love, how we connect, and why we believe being healthy includes you, your pet, and playing together every day.  So get out and live life's adventure with your dog.  It's the Zuke's way.

Two Treats with health benefits--

Pumpkin--canned (not pumpkin pie filling, but just the pumpkin) is a natural at preventing the occasional loose stool. The health benefits are many. You might want to freeze pumpkin, and add a chunk to their diet. To do this, you would bake the pumpkin, and cut into slabs and freeze. It is a great-tasting treat, that promotes good gut health.

Yogurt--the store-brand with live cultures works well. The OwyheeStar Weims like any flavor (or even the plain); however, strawberry may be the all-time favorite. Yogurt is good for the gut, and helps to keep the yeasty-bacterial infections at bay. This can benefit the coat, and ear-health.

Note: Food and Treats are not a one-size-fits all type of scenario. Some of the Weimaraners will do better on another food. Nevertheless, this food seems to work for nearly ever Weimaraner.

Feeding Recommendations Are Found On The Bringing Them Home Page

Sidebar:

OwyheeStar has used 5-Star rated large breed puppy chow, and not had the same good result across the board as with the Diamond Naturals (Lg Breed). When combined with the superior NuVet and the Fastrack Microbials, the result is something that works. It is far superior to the 5-star food.

Note: OwyheeStar recommends not purchasing more than two bags of puppy chow, as well as not stockpiling dog food. Nutrients begin to dissipate, and it can become rancid. If you live remote, a three-month supply would be the maximum recommendation to keep on hand.

Avoid grain in those store-bought snacks. There are some ultra choices--made from duck, chicken, and other meats. These are costly, but very nice. Be in the know about the treats you buy. Where were they made? What about the ingredients--were they imported and risky? Not that everything imported is dangerous but with recent reports (Oct 2013) of dogs dropping dead from imported dog jerky treats, it calls for caution. Zuke's Minis come in tasty duck, chicken, etc.

Other Choices...
