Puppy Exit Information
Puppy Departure Information
Puppies cannot leave OwyheeStar prior to their seven-week birthday. There will be NO exceptions. The reason for this stance is the sixth week within the litter has been proven essential for the pup's development. The importance of week six scenario is true for the individual pup, and well as within the litter's social structure. Most OwyheeStar pups leave for their new home closer to the eight-week birthday. If a puppy is traveling on a commercial flight, they are legally required to be at least eight-weeks-old. The eight-week requirement is valid for the carry on puppy, as well as for any pup that is shipped. Keep in mind some states have laws governing the age a puppy must be to leave the breeder's home. Some litters mature slower than others; the puppies may (on rare occasions) be less ready to depart on the eight-week birthday, or before. Any puppy leaving OwyheeStar must be prepared for the transition to their new home. When in doubt Cliff and Shela would rather error on the side of caution. Departure Arrangements
~Oh Happy Day--one to remember! OwyheeStar will do everything it can to accommodate each family; however, there is a limit to what is possible. Everyone has their personal agenda; it is a fact of life. Ultimately, planning what is best for the pups comes first. Secondly, if someone is flying in, the plan to meet them at the Boise airport is set in stone. As mentioned above, a puppy cannot be carried on a commercial plane until they are eight weeks old. Almost without exception, there needs to be a timely plan that works for the puppy's well-being as well as coordinates with the litter exit plan. |
Payments in a Nutshell
Once a pup is born we require the full $100 (or $250 for the Longhair; half down on the undocked tail option) to reserve the puppy in your name. The exact pup may not be known in many cases until completion of the Discovery and Placement Test at six weeks of age. The puppy deposit is required when OwyheeStar believes there is a potential pup born for you within a particular litter. Checks and/or money orders should be made payable to Cliff Nielsen. The mailing address is 369 Onion Ave., Ontario, OR 97914. They do not accept credit card or PayPal. In extraordinary circumstances there might be another option--possibly wiring the funds to the OwyheeStar bank account. For those wishing to pay the remainder due with a personal check, OwyheeStar asks to have that in hand two weeks prior to the pup's departure. Otherwise cash or money order (made out to Cliff Nielsen) can be used on the day you pick up your pup. |
Location-Location-Location
OwyheeStar likes to plan to meet as many people at one time as possible. Over the years, they have come up with a meet-up location that works well. This location brings those getting a pup and the pups closer. It won't be a fit for everyone; however, it works for a good percentage of folks. The meet-up location puts Cliff as far as he can feasibly drive, and then turn around to get home in time to complete the evening Weim care. Although, Cliff and Shela have set another location on occasion, it is a rare occurrence. That being said, the normal meet-up occurs east of Pendleton, OR (at the Wildhorse Casino Parking Lot)--early midday (at around 11 AM Pacific Time).
If you are located in the Pacific Northwest, the Idaho Panhandle area, or just about anywhere in Oregon, the meet-up location should work to your advantage. OwyheeStar can make one trip per litter; therefore, it is important to find the best possible day (that works for as many as possible). Sometimes if there is a conflict, someone coming your direction will be glad to bring your pup along, and meet you closer to home.
The meet up saves the pups from potential exposure to the risks associate with a longer road trip. At the same time, it also lessens the departure stress. The first leg of the pup's transition, is with a litter-mate. Meeting near Pendleton, Oregon, means most everyone can make it home by evening (or before). That way, you and the pup get to their new home in time to have some playtime, meet-and-greet, exploration, as well as some time to settle into their new home. It makes for a big day, but the OwyheeStar meet-up does make the process more doable.

Litter Exit Meet Up
Many times we find the vast majority of our puppy folks live in one of the following locations:
Of course, there are people who do not fit this scenario for one reason or other. In some instances (if there are two families coming from another direction we may be able to problem solve. Sometimes other than the Pendleton area meetups have happened (Boise, Burns, New Meadows, etc.) We cannot promise anything; however, we will do our best to try to make things work. On occasion, it has worked than another family has carried a litter-mater for another family. This can be a rewarding experience. It is nice for the two pups.
