The Blue Weimaraner

Reports of the first Blue Weimaraner date back to 1940 (in Austria) when a single blue pup was born in a litter of silvers. There have been two reported mutations, both occurred in Europe. From the beginning, the blues have been surrounded by controversy. If you wish to read more Click here and read the history of the Blue Weimaraner.

Understanding the making of a breed, the mix of DNA and the culling process it leaves many to wonder. After almost 75 years of the Blue Weimaraner being in the mix, it seems they would be accepted. The Weimaraner Club of America does not accept them. What does this mean? It means they cannot compete in AKC (American Kennel Club) and WCA (Weimaraner Club of America) sanctioned Show Events. They cannot earn the distinction of being a top breed club sanctioned show Weimaraner.

There are three recognized coat colors for the Weimaraner--Silver Gray, Gray, and Blue. As with all the colors, the blue can have a lighter hue, or become almost midnight black. Color darkens with age a bit. The Weimaraner coat also seems to pick up, or reflect some of the color from the surroundings. Sunlight is apt to give the truest photo color.

Despite attempts to squelch the popularity of the blue coat color, it continues to gain a loyal following.
