The Expectant Bernie
Bernie Moments Before
"This hurts more than I remembered!"
May 4 @ 6:16 PM--We are feeling that tonight could be the night. Of course, sometimes they have false labor (as with humans), but she shows all the signs --blood shot eyes, panting, discomfort, etc. Poor sweet girl--watch for news!
May 4 @ 6:16 PM--I don't often eat a baked potato--tonight was the exception. It wasn't very large being a Yukon Gold rather than a Russet Baker, but more than enough. I ate the middle and gave Bernie the skin and the outer potato. She cleaned it up--once again it was on the top of the kibble, but she slicked it off leaving the darned kibble in her bowl.
May 4 @ 3:38 PM--Bernie is doing Okay. She just came in from another trip outside. It is pretty warm out there--79-degrees. She seemed happy to climb back in her quiet cubby. I had her dinner waiting --it is a bit lighter than earlier in the day. We don't want to overload her gut.
There was a little regular kibble in the bottom of her dish. She picked all the good stuff off--amazing how they can do that.
May 4 @ 9:32 AM--Bernie and Boone just came back it a few minutes ago after spending about a half an hour in the fresh air--the sunshine smiling on them.
I had a larger than usual special breakfast waiting for Bernie--she ate all but a tiny bite. Typically, the female has no appetite right before a Whelp. (OMG) Sometimes they do eat right before a Whelp--we used always to take their temperature and look for the sudden drop, but even that was not consistent. We monitor and as long as they are well within the window--we wait. Of course, if someone was overdue--we would have to consult Dr. Calhoun for a C-section. We have only had one C-section in 25 years.
May 4 @ 8:30 AM--Bernie is well again this morning. She has not yet been offered breakfast.
May 3 @ 8:30 AM--Bernie had a good night. She is happy and tail-wagging, but uncomfortable. She came to my workstation (along with Bonne), and they both got their loves. Bernie with her crazy-looking smile. It looks scary , but at the same time, it is so darned cute.
She is moaning and flopping around. No breakfast yet--we will wait a little bit to get her something to eat. Mornings are not a good time to load the gut--any expectant Mama knows that is the truth. Anynow--all is well.
May 3 @ 4:50 PM--Bernie and Cliff left for a walk about twenty minutes ago. She had eaten reasonably well---only what she prefers though. She is not eating any kibble. She loves her NuVet and the Probiotics we give her. Other than that, she is eating meat and vegetables or whatever she wants right now. (Haha)
May 3 @ 10:20 PM--Bernie, Boone, and Henri are out for their last run of the evening--before we tuck them in for the night. Bernie has a small meal of meat and veggies waiting upon her return. As I mentioned, she is a very picky eater right now--typically she eats whatever we offer without reservation. Pregnant females become fickle eaters--our goal is to keep them eating right up until they are about ready to whelp.
